Representative Wayne Smith
Family Man. Local Business Owner. Proud U.S. Army Veteran. Proven Conservative Leader.
Elected to the Texas House of Representatives in 2002, Wayne Smith first served his country in Vietnam as a member of the United States Army. After his honorable discharge from the service, Wayne moved back to Harris County where he worked his way up the ranks of several transportation and engineering companies before starting his own engineering firm, Wayne Smith & Associates, Inc.
As a local business owner, veteran, and engineer, Wayne has used his experience in the Texas House to reduce wasteful government spending and lower taxes to encourage job growth. He has worked hard to protect veterans, improve local transportation, and preserve our local and state history through projects with the San Jacinto Battleground Monument and the Texas Capitol Vietnam Memorial.
Additionally, Wayne has consistently voted to improve border security measures by providing funding for increased boots on the ground and the deployment of new technologies along the border. He has helped cut taxes for 40,000 small business owners in Texas – 7,000 in Harris County alone – by raising small business tax exemptions. He also has increased funding for public education and helped pass homeowner appraisal reforms to limit appraisal creeps.
And at the local level, Wayne has led the effort to keep the Battleship Texas stationed at the San Jacinto Battleground Historic site, improve safety and security in the Houston Ship Channel, and reduce traffic congestion.
For his leadership on issues important to the state and local community, Wayne Smith has won numerous awards including the “Fighter for Free Enterprise” award from the Texas Association of Business, “Outstanding Public Servant” award from the Texas House Republican Caucus, “Conservative Leader” award from the Heritage Alliance, and the “Certificate of Appreciation” from the Texas Eagle Education Foundation.
Wayne and his wife Brenda live in Baytown. He has two children and three grandchildren. In addition to his service in the Texas House, he has remained active in the local community, serving on the Baytown Planning Commission, the Baytown Chamber of Commerce, and the Greater Houston Partnership.
